This recording was a bit of an experiment. I demoed it out like I usually do and had recently recorded a couple songs for Tarik's Happy Orchestra releases about 16 months ago. I had some songs I wanted to hear a real drummer play, so I sent him this one and he crushed it. The idea at the time was to make it a Big Tooth song and get each member to lay down their parts. At that point, we planned on releasing one remotely recorded song per month (back before social distancing was "cool"), and this is actually one of three songs that got shelved, along with that idea.
Fast forward to our current state of affairs...In the spirit of organizing and finishing that which needs to be finished, I decided to just record the rest of the parts myself. I'll be the first to point out there's a bit of "demo love" with how it turned out. And it ends up having an almost Genesis feel to it, even though it started out as more of a Stevie Wonder rip off (I have a bad habit of that). Tarik's drumming is on point, and my fat fingers are okay on a MicroKorg as long as it's mostly white keys. Also, the blend of acoustic guitars and synth works very well. I'm happy with the vocals for now, so I'd better release it before I wanna do them over.
Life is all about family. So is this song.
lyrics
We put years into it
Found our own way through it
Had our differences on when to follow rules
Never did we say, "screw it"
No one could say we blew it
Though sometimes it feels we're sinking in the deep end of the pool
But baby, we've got to own it
Whenever it tears, we've sewn it
Cradle it in our hands just like a precious jewel
Maybe we're tired from it
But we must overcome it
Because there's nothing more important than you and I building this school
There's nothing I'd rather do
Than spend every morning, afternoon, and night with you
